U.S. CELLULAR CENTER IN ASHEVILLE, N.C., TO HOST
2018 FED CUP BY BNP PARIBAS WORLD GROUP FIRST ROUND
BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND THE NETHERLANDS, FEB. 10-11

U.S. Team Comes to Asheville after Winning its 18th Overall Fed Cup
and First Title Since 2000 in Belarus This Past Weekend

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Nov. 14, 2017 – The USTA today announced that the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C., has been selected as the site for the 2018 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group First Round between the United States and the Netherlands, Feb. 10-11. Fed Cup is the world’s largest annual international team competition in women’s sport, with approximately 100 nations taking part each year.

The U.S. comes to Asheville after winning its record 18th Fed Cup title this past weekend against Belarus in Minsk. The title-winning team was led by world No. 10 and 2017 US Open semifinalist Coco Vandeweghe, No. 13 and 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens and Top 70 players Shelby Rogers and Alison Riske. This was the U.S.’s first Fed Cup title since 2000.

The best-of-five match series against the Netherlands begins Saturday, Feb. 10, with two singles matches. That is followed by two reverse singles matches and the doubles match on Sunday, Feb. 11. Matches will be played on a temporary indoor hard court. The winner of this matchup will advance to the Fed Cup Semifinals, April 21-22.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday, Nov. 17, at 10 a.m. ET. Two-day ticket packages for both Saturday and Sunday will be sold at reduced prices ranging from $50 to $250 ($25 to $125 per day), representing the greatest initial ticket value. Single-day tickets for Saturday or Sunday will be sold with prices ranging from $30 to $135 per day. Tickets may be purchased by visiting www.usta.com/fedcup or by calling 888-334-USTA (8782).

USTA members will have the opportunity to purchase tickets in advance through a special USTA member-only presale beginning Tuesday, Nov. 14, and running through Thursday, Nov. 16 (or while supplies last). “We are incredibly excited to bring the 2017 Fed Cup Champions to Asheville, a city with a rich tennis history that goes back more than a century,” said USTA Chairman of the Board, CEO and President, Katrina Adams. “Having just hoisted the Fed Cup trophy this past weekend in Minsk after their win over Belarus in the Fed Cup final, the team is already looking forward to competing again in February against the Netherlands, and is hoping to start another title run in front of an enthusiastic North Carolina crowd.”

Asheville will be hosting Fed Cup for the first time. The U.S. Fed Cup team has played in North Carolina on three prior occasions, holding a 2-1 record in the state. The U.S. competed last in North Carolina in 2002, in Charlotte at the Olde Providence Racquet Club. The team also played in Raleigh in 1999 at the Raleigh Racquet Club, as well as in Wilmington in 1995 at Trask Coliseum.

The U.S. was drawn to play away in the Netherlands for the 2018 World Group First Round when the draw took place in September, but the USTA choose to exercise its right under new Fed Cup regulations to host the first-round tie. Under regulations that came into effect from the International Tennis Federation in August, the finalist nations in the 2017 Fed Cup Final (the U.S. and Belarus) were given the option of hosting their 2018 first-round ties.

The USTA has partnered with ExploreAsheville.com to bring this event to Asheville.

“I am thrilled that Asheville will play host to some of the most talented women’s tennis stars in the world,” said Asheville Mayor Esther Manheimer. “This will be an exciting event for all who attend.”

“The U.S. Cellular Center team is excited to play host to such a prestigious event on an international stage while highlighting Asheville as a premier tennis community,” said Chris Corl, General Manager of the U.S. Cellular Center.

The U.S. holds a 6-2 head-to-head record over the Netherlands in Fed Cup play. The U.S. last faced the Netherlands in the 1998 World Group First Round in Kiawah Island, S.C., sweeping the tie, 5-0. The Americans’ only losses to the Dutch came in 1968 and 1997.

U.S. Fed Cup Captain Kathy Rinaldi will select the four players to represent the U.S. no later than 10 days prior to the event. With the win this past weekend, Rinaldi, who made her debut as the U.S. Fed Cup Captain in 2017, became the first Captain since Marty Riessen in 1986 to win the Fed Cup title in the first year of captaincy.

The site selection is subject to final approval by the ITF. Tennis Channel will present live daily coverage of the World Group First Round.

The U.S. is 40-6 all-time in Fed Cup ties played at home and holds an overall 148-36 record. For more information, including access to player and historical Fed Cup records, please go to www.usta.com/fedcup or www.fedcup.com. About Christmas Jam
Curated and presented by Grammy Award-winning vocalist-songwriter, producer and revered guitarist Warren Haynes, the Christmas Jam is a one-of-a-kind music marathon. Since its inception 29 years ago, the concert has provided an opportunity for the performing artists, audience and the local community to give back during the holiday season. Over the past 19 years, Haynes – an Asheville native – has worked closely with the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity. To date, 36 houses have been built with proceeds from the Jam and more than 2 million dollars has been raised, including a record-breaking half-million dollars marking one of the largest-ever contributions to the organization. In addition to supporting the construction of Habitat homes, proceeds also go towards purchasing and developing land to build entire Habitat neighborhoods – such as the 25-house Hudson Hills neighborhood in West Asheville. The subdivision was named in honor of Warren and his wife Stefani’s son Hudson. And the street – Soulshine Court – is named after one of Warren’s most beloved songs, “Soulshine.” This year’s Xmas Jam House will be built in Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity’s newest neighborhood, a 21-house community in Arden (South Asheville).

Christmas Jam’s rich history continues to grow year after year and has seen unforgettable musical moments from past performers including The Allman Brothers Band, Blues Traveler, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Jackson Browne, Phil Lesh Quartet, Coheed & Cambria, Counting Crows, Sheryl Crow, Ani Difranco, Peter Frampton, Michael Franti, Ben Harper, Hot Tuna, Ray LaMontagne, Phil Lesh & Friends, Dave Matthews, Steve Miller Band, Neville Brothers, O.A.R., Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Widespread Panic, John Scofield, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Bob Weir, Johnny Winter and many more.

TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND RESPONDS TO QUICK SELLOUT IN ASHEVILLE
ADDS SECOND NIGHT DUE TO OVERWHELMING DEMAND

The excitement is palpable in Asheville, NC  for the return of Grammy Award-winners, Tedeschi Trucks Band, as evidenced by last week’s quick sell out of their Saturday, January 20 show at the US Cellular Center’s Thomas Wolfe Auditorium. The blues rock tour de force has responded to the overwhleming demand, adding a second performance on Sunday, January 21. Both nights will include a supporting set by Amy Ray, of Indigo Girls, and her band. Tickets for the January 21 show will go on sale this Thursday, October 5 at 10:00 AM.

Now with a catalog of five albums and nearly a decade of steady touring in the U.S. and abroad, Tedeschi Trucks Band carries a distinguished reputation earned from both audiences and critics as one of the premier live bands in the world.  The 12-piece powerhouse, led by the husband-and-wife team of guitarist Derek Trucks and guitarist-singer Susan Tedeschi, continues to expand a growing repertoire of original material written both individually and as a band, plus tasty covers deep-seated in American Roots, embracing genres, from rock, jazz, blues, and Americana to gospel, country, soul, and funk.

Their latest release, Live From the Fox Oakland, (March, 2017) CD/DVD was recorded in a single night and beautifully captures the group’s incredible power in concert. The double-disc live recording, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Blues and #6 Rock Albums chart, showcases the band’s ability to move seamlessly from blistering rock and blues to soulful ballads and includes their take on classics from Derek and the Dominos, Leonard Cohen, and even Miles Davis among TTB’s original songs. The film also gives a behind-the-scenes look at the band on the road.

Live From the Fox Oakland, follows a quartet of critically-hailed and commercially successful TTB efforts: a Grammy-winning inaugural studio record Revelator (2011), a double-album live, Everybody’s Talkin’ (2012), Made Up Mind (2013), featuring a slew of guest songwriters, and 2016’s Let Me Get By, the first to be solely produced by Trucks and written in-house by the TTB family and called by the Associated Press “one of the great records of the year.”  Additionally, in their recent days off the road, the band has been busy writing new songs and expects to roadtest a few on this fall’s run.

From their steady rise as solo artists to now being hailed as “two of the best roots rock musicians of their generation” (NPR), Tedeschi and Trucks have earned the respect of both heroes and peers. They have been invited to the White House filmed for PBS special, requested personally for tributes to B.B. King, Bob Dylan, and Hubert Sumlin, and appeared on countless recordings of renowned artists such as John Prine, Rosanne Cash, Eric Church, Wynonna Judd and Herbie Hancock.

Heaps of critical praise continue to follow nearly every show, declaring “Tedesch Trucks Band’s fusion of soul, rock and gospel is downright divine,” (Daily Herald) and suggesting the “flamethowing powers” (Hartford Courant) and “moments of bliss” (Fayetteville Flyer) make TTB “The Wall of Sound of Bands.” (NYSmusic). Even rock legend David Crosby recently offered his praise, tweeting “I love (TTB) very much.”

U.S. Cellular Center offers new and improved menu

ASHEVILLE – The U.S. Cellular Center is announcing a new and expanded menu for concessions selections at upcoming events to be held at the facility.

Fresh philosophy:

The U.S. Cellular Center is saying goodbye to pre-wrapped items that emerge from a warming drawer wrapped in a wad of foil.  Starting September 16 at our first event and throughout the upcoming season, all food items will be served straight from the grill or roller-grill.  Additionally all buns at the facility will now be delivered fresh, not frozen, guaranteeing the most fresh taste and experience to our guests.

New menu items and vegetarian options:

Hickory Nut Gap Local Dog

The venue’s food and beverage team has partnered with local meat provider Hickory Nut Gap to offer a local dog option. Hickory Nut Gap beef is 100% grassfed and pasture raised with no added hormones or antibiotics.

Marinated Portobello Sandwich*

Portobello mushroom, marinated in Greek vinaigrette with feta, grilled to perfection and served with sliced pepper jack cheese, arugula and chipotle aioli.

Signature Smokehouse Burger*

This 5.3-ounce burger is served with sliced aged cheddar, applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and a tangy Western North Carolina barbecue sauce.

Other new items include garlic fries, beer cheese for pretzels, churros, North Carolina pulled pork barbecue, and an upgraded chip and candy selection.

*These items are available at select ExploreAsheville.com Arena events only.

Expanded adult beverage options:

The upcoming new menu will also include a second, more premium, tier of wine and liquor selections as well as a 24-ounce draft beer option and local cider option

The new tier of wine will be Trinity Oaks, an environmentally conscious winery that plants a tree for every bottle purchased. Since 2008, the winery has planted over 15 million trees.  Based on past sales history, the U.S. Cellular Center hopes to be responsible for the planting of an additional 1,000 trees this upcoming event season.

As has been the case for three years now, all brews served at the facility are only from companies within the 828 area code.

Composting:

Thomas Wolfe Auditorium will begin composting this fall. All patrons will have the ability to separate waste according to landfill, recycling and compost. Bins marked for compostable items will be stationed in guest areas.

The food and beverage team is doing its part by using only compostable or recyclable materials, as available, in an effort to bring the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium one step closer to a zero waste facility.

Open Call for Volunteer Groups

ASHEVILLE – The U.S. Cellular Center is currently accepting applications from qualified volunteer groups to assist in the concessions operations when needed at the U.S. Cellular Center.

Recruitment Process:

Applications must be submitted via email to Brian Candler, Food & Beverage Manager at bcandler@ashevillenc.gov or dropped off at the U.S. Cellular Center box office between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday – Friday by 5 p.m. September 1.

Questions must be submitted to Brian Candler via email by 3 p.m.  August 23.  Answers to all questions will be compiled and sent to all interested groups by 5 p.m. August 25.

Applications can be found at https://www.harrahscherokeecenterasheville.com/food-beverage/volunteer-concession-program/

U.S. Cellular Center Concessions Volunteer Program Goals:

The Primary Goal:  Supplement paid part time and temporary/seasonal staffing for large events held at the facility.  Due to the infrequency of events requiring large numbers of staff, the center struggles to retain enough staff on payroll to fulfill all needs for a large arena concert or special event.  In the case of these large events, the center offers the opportunity for volunteer groups to work in concession stands as a fundraising opportunity.

The Secondary Goal:  Provide local volunteer groups with the opportunity to raise funds for their given organization.

Potential Group Earnings Annually:

Volunteer groups working with the U.S. Cellular Center will earn percentages of sales on a commission basis while volunteering with the facility.  Groups will earn 10% of gross food and nonalcoholic beverage sales and 5% of gross alcoholic beverage sales.  In 2014, staff researched statistics of the program’s previous 5 years.

In Fiscal year 2016 the average group earned $900/event worked, with the U.S. Cellular Center helping our groups raise a total of over $58,000 throughout the year.  Lowest group earnings for a given event was $250 and the highest was $6,024.  Volunteer groups covered a total of 64 event shifts throughout the year.

In Fiscal Year 2017 the average group earned  $980/event worked, with the U.S. Cellular Center helping our groups raise a total of over $81,000 throughout the year.  Lowest group earnings for a given event was $250 and the highest was $8,184.  Volunteer groups covered a total of 69 event shifts throughout the year.

If a given event’s sales do not dictate a commission amount of greater than $250, the U.S. Cellular Center will provide a minimum commission of $250 for said event.

As a group becomes more experienced it can be expected that earnings will increase as experience typically breeds efficiency which in turn breeds increased sales volume and therefore increases commission amounts.

The above earnings averages include cash donations.  Groups working in concession stand locations or at portable bars may place donation jars on the counter tops.  This jars must be plastic and must clearly state that all donated funds are to be given directly to the group.

Scheduling Expectations:

Groups can expect on average to be requested to work 8 event shifts annually dependant on event schedule.  Total need for staffing levels in the facility is dictated by total ticket sales or expected sales leading into a given event.  There will be times that ticket sales in the last week prior to an event will require the addition of a volunteer group.  When this occurs groups may be asked to work an event with less that 5 days notice.  U.S. Cellular Center Food & Beverage staff commits to request volunteer groups for events with as much advance notice as possible, but short lead times prior to events may occur.  Upon signing up for the program, each group recognizes the below highlight events in which the group will be needed.

Event Name Typical Annual Time Frame
Warren Haynes Christmas Jam Second Weekend in December
Southern Conference Basketball Championships First full weekend in March (5 day event)
Concert(s) Halloween Weekend
Concert(s) New Years Eve & December 30
Concert(s) Third Full weekend in February

Scheduling will be handled by the facility’s Food & Beverage Manager or designee and will be handled over email and phone.   There is no guarantee of a minimum number of shifts or earnings that a given group will receive annually.

Rick Springfield Over the past three decades, Rick Springfield has worn many hats as an entertainer and performer. The creator of some of the finest power-pop of the ’80s, he’s a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and musician who has sold 25 million albums and scored 17 U.S. Top 40 hits, including “Jessie’s Girl,” “Don’t Talk to Strangers,” “An Affair of the Heart,” “I’ve Done Everything for You,” “Love Somebody,” and “Human Touch.” He’s an accomplished actor who most recently starred opposite Meryl Streep in the feature film Ricki and the Flash and gave a chameleonic performance as the creepy Dr. Pitlor in HBO’s prestige drama True Detective. He’s also a talented author — both his candid 2010 memoir Late, Late at Night (which Rolling Stone named one of the 25 greatest rock memoirs of all time) and his 2014 comedic novel Magnificent Vibration earned rave reviews and spots on the New York Times Best Sellers’ list. In 2013, Springfield wrote and recorded “The Man That Never Was” with Dave Grohl for the soundtrack to Sound City — the Foo Fighters’ frontman’s documentary about the San Fernando Valley recording studio that was Springfield’s home away from home (his manager owned the building). Rolling Stone called Springfield’s touching interview in the film its “breakout story.” In 2014, Springfield was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located around the corner from the first apartment he lived in when he first arrived in the U.S. from Australia in 1971.

Richarx Marx As a performer, songwriter and producer, Richard Marx’s nearly three-decade-long career has had innumerable highlights. The Chicago native has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, starting with his self-titled debut which went to #8 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and spawned four Top 5 singles, including the chart-topping “Hold on to the Nights,” and “Don’t Mean Nothing” which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. The follow-up, 1989’s Repeat Offender, was even more successful, hitting #1 and going quadruple-platinum with two #1 singles in “Satisfied” and “Right Here Waiting.” When both Rush Street (with two #1 AC hits in “Keep Coming Back” and “Hazard”) and Paid Vacation (with its #1 AC hit, “Now and Forever”) went platinum, Marx achieved a seven-year string of triumphs that rivaled any in pop-rock music history. To this day, he is the only male artist in history to have his first seven singles reach the Top 5 on the Billboard charts.
